We’re looking for volunteers to join in our summer-long ‘Love your Canal’ waterway adoption project on Glasgow’s historic Forth & Clyde Canal, in partnership with Scottish Canals.
Through the ‘Love your Canal’ canal adoption project, you will be able to make a real difference by caring for the canal in North Glasgow whilst having some fun, meeting new friends and learning a wide range of interesting, practical skills along the waterway.
We will be based at Maryhill Locks (Locks 21 -25) with activities stretching along the canal up to Lock 27 in Anniesland.
Volunteering runs every Friday – Monday. You can come as many days as you like, or just come once!
Just like traditional lock keepers on the 225 year old waterway, you’ll spend a little time opening locks for passing boats whilst also spending time helping to repair stonework, painting and carrying out litterpicks.
You’ll be supervised and supported by a Scottish Waterways Trust volunteer supervisor, and you’ll get the chance to receive training in a wide range of areas including health and safety, canal heritage and local history, traditional lime mortaring and wildflower identification and recording. No experience necessary!
You’ll also be able to achieve awards such as the John Muir Discovery Award and Heritage Hero Award as well as certificates of competency for training in areas such as water safety and lime mortaring.
Warm, waterproof clothing recommended though PPE will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch.
Booking is essential. Please contact Alan below.
