Go Wild on the Canal
Evening Event for All the Family
6.30pm-9pm, Saturday 21st May 2016
Scottish Waterways Trust and Scottish Canals will host an evening of fun and adventurous activities at Banavie Basin on the Caledonian Canal, in Banavie, on Saturday 21st May 2016.
This is the largest public event in Lochaber jointly organised by the two organisations. It builds on the success of the Go Wild on the Canal events staged in Inverness and Banavie annually since 2013.
The event launches Wild Lochaber Festival, an annual celebration of the wildlife and landscapes of Lochaber.
Go Wild on the Canal has been put together to encourage more people to discover, explore and enjoy the two hundred year old Caledonian Canal which runs from Inverness to the sealock at Corpach, near Banavie.
Activities at Banavie Basin on the evening will include canoe, rowing and raft races, a ‘canal jam’ music tent, community stalls and food and refreshments.
Entry to the Go Wild on the Canal event is free. Many of the activities are free, for some others there will be a small cost.
Parking is available in the main car park at Banavie below the Moorings Hotel
Stephen Wiseman, Scottish Waterways Trust Heritage Officer for the Caledonian Canal explains:
“Go Wild on the Canal is an exciting and adventurous evening of fun which showcases the fantastic and free greenspace of the Caledonian Canal.
Scottish Waterways Trust, with partners Scottish Canals, want to encourage people to make the most of their local canal and the traffic-free, outdoors opportunities it provides for everyone – all ages, abilities and aspirations!
We are delighted to open the Wild Lochaber Festival once again to help people celebrate, enjoy and learn about the fascinating wildlife, rich heritage and stunning landscapes on their doorstep.
There will be lots of chances to get on the water in various ways but also to appreciate what the canal has to offer as a vehicle free towpath.”
