Volunteer Coordinator
Alan Forrester

Hello! I’m Alan and I’m the Trust’s Volunteer Coordinator, covering everything from our canalside conservation and heritage volunteering to our Green Action and canal college programmes and even our wildflower surveys.

Before I came to the Trust, I had spent all my working life in the science and engineering sectors, including a 12 year stretch in nuclear medicine, but I’ve never been in a role that’s as rewarding as this. The difference our projects make to the lives of people is just incredible. Through canal college, we helped a young girl who suffered from crippling social anxiety learn to deal with her condition and secure a place at college studying creative design. That’s the kind of result that keeps you going and I’m very proud of the work we do and the commitment of my wee team.

Get in touch with me with any enquiries or ideas about volunteering, whether it’s a one-off session or a long-term project and no matter the nature of the group. Canals offer a blank canvas for education, arts, employability, and health activities – get in touch and help us use them to benefit the people who need them most.
