Scottish Waterways Trust is now recruiting young volunteers for Green Action, an outdoor skills training programme based at The Falkirk Wheel.
Green Action, made possible with thanks to Forestry Commission Scotland and The Bank of Scotland Foundation, is designed to help 16-25 year olds not in employment, education or training take a step closer to work.
Green Action, which begins on Thursday 1st September and will run every Thursday for 12 weeks, combines real work experience with the opportunity to gain valuable skills training and certificates.
The course, free to participants, will give young volunteers the chance to carry out a range of practical outdoors activities including landscaping and gardening, forest tasks, conservation tasks, woodworking, planting bulbs and wildflowers and painting and maintenance.
Participants will also have the opportunity to achieve a number of CV boosting awards and certificates, including the Saltire Award, John Muir Award, Youth Achievement Award and Green Action Certificate.
Scottish Waterways Trust are recruiting volunteer mentors, aged over 25, to pass on their own skills and lifelong learning to young volunteers. Mentors will also be able to learn new skills and earn CV boosting certificates.
Since it launched over six years ago, over 400 people have taken part in Green Action with 65% securing a job, place in training, education or a new volunteering role following the programme.
Green Action Project Manager Alan Forrester explains:
“Green Action helps young people who are furthest from the jobs market and who most need our help. For six years we have seen young people, who have often faced difficult setbacks in life, learn new skills, earn awards and develop confidence. The achievements our young volunteers can make in just 12 weeks is inspiring, and we are delighted to welcome yet another group who will enhance their local waterways environment and community for everyone to enjoy.”
