We’ve got some exciting new volunteering opportunities in Edinburgh as part of our plans to open Scotland’s first ever ‘Canal Shed’ in the city!
Over the coming weeks and months, we’re hosting a series of canal shed taster sessions, so local people can get involved and shape what the future of our canal shed might look like.
But what is a ‘Canal Shed’?
We’re hoping to set up a permanent ‘Canal Shed’ with partners Polwarth Church and Scottish Canals in Edinburgh so members of the community can come together every week, make new friends and do something good in their local environment.
The ‘Canal Shed’ is a bit like a men’s shed – it’s a community hub where everyone is welcome to come along, learn new skills and pass on their own skills to others. The shed is a bit of a metaphor, it’s a safe area which provides space for people to share, learn and grow. Actual shed optional!
What will happen at the Canal Shed?
At the canal shed we’ll have a whole range of traditional volunteering opportunities people can get involved with including gardening, woodwork, vegetation clearance and DIY. There will be lots of other fun and exciting things to do too like come along to heritage talks, enjoyed guided walks, help monitor wildflowers and wildlife in the area and help learn about and share canal history.
We’ll provide all the tools, materials and safety equipment you’ll need to take part, so volunteers will just need to come along and be willing to learn new skills and help share some of their own skills with others.
It’s the perfect opportunity to:
- Care for a fascinating part of Scotland’s heritage
- Enjoy a variety of different volunteer activities in the outdoors
- Meet new people and make new friends
- Learn new skills
- Do something different
