News release: Charity appeals for help after vandals destroy learning space

Vandals have destroyed Scottish Waterways Trust’s outdoor learning area and it is appealing for help to replace it.

Early on Sunday morning, a fire was started deliberately at the Trust’s Falkirk Wheel base that resulted in their training gazebo being burnt to the ground and outdoor seating destroyed. Two steel containers that stored outdoor tools and learning equipment were also damaged beyond repair.

They are now appealing for donations to help create a new outdoor learning space.

The Trust is a charity that works with young people to help them gain the skills and confidence to find work within some of the country’s most disadvantaged communities. It also focuses on encouraging people to conserve and improve the rich heritage and environments of Scotland’s canals.

Over the past ten years they’ve invested more than £10 million in hundreds of pioneering training and community projects.

Since 2010, over 700 young people have taken part in a Scottish Waterways Trust employability programme along Scotland’s canal network.

For several years, the Trust has used this area as a base for employability projects such as Green Action and for other community based learning activities.

‘Outdoor learning is what really sets us apart from other training providers, but we still need an element of classroom based work, this has now been destroyed,’ said Trust Chief Executive, Karen Moore.

‘It will have an impact on our ability to deliver training so we need to get something in place again as soon as possible. This was a community resource to benefit local people and it is local people who will be missing out until we can find a suitable replacement. We would be grateful for any help in in getting something a little more permanent built.’

The Trust are also appealing to any local businesses that may have unused storage containers that they would like to donate.

Anyone who’d like to donate can do so online here or can contact us on / 01324 677809 for more information.
